China's Biggest E-Motorbike Brand Just Entered Kenya

The world's largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer arrived in Kenya in early June, and it didn't come quietly.

Yadea, a Chinese company that has sold more than 16.3 million electric two-wheelers globally in a single year, unveiled five motorcycle models at a Nairobi showcase, targeting boda boda operators, personal commuters, and last-mile logistics businesses.

Pricing starts at up to $3,000 per unit, roughly Ksh388,000 depending on the model, placing Yadea in roughly the same territory as existing Kenyan EV entrants like Roam Motors, Arc Ride, and Ampersand.

The company has partnered with Arc Ride to tap existing battery-swapping infrastructure in Kenya, a smart move given that battery swapping has emerged as the dominant model for keeping EV running costs competitive with petrol bikes.

Yadea's timing is complicated by a pending Finance Bill change that would reclassify electric motorcycles from zero-rated to VAT-exempt, stripping assemblers of the 16% VAT refund on assembly inputs that has helped keep prices down.

Whether the final legislation bites into Yadea's pricing strategy before the brand has had a chance to build market share is one of the first commercial tests its Kenya entry will face
