KMRC Sustainability Bond Lists at NSE
The Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company listed its Ksh3 billion sustainability bond on the NSE after attracting Ksh9.38 billion in investor bids.

The Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company formally listed its Ksh3 billion sustainability bond on the Nairobi Securities Exchange on May 25, completing a transaction that had already made headlines when its subscription window closed nearly two weeks earlier.

Investors submitted bids worth Ksh9.38 billion, a 312.8% oversubscription on an offer of Ksh3 billion.

The bond, priced at a fixed rate of 12.2% over an eight-year term, is the second tranche of KMRC's Ksh10.5 billion Medium-Term Note programme, its first return to the capital markets since a 2022 debut that was also heavily subscribed.

Proceeds will fund two categories: green affordable housing loans for energy-efficient and climate-resilient homes, and social housing loans targeting women and low-income earners.

Since its establishment, KMRC has refinanced over Ksh30 billion in home loans across 39 counties, with nearly half of all refinanced mortgages benefiting women.

The subscription matters beyond KMRC itself.

It arrived just months after Safaricom's Ksh40 billion sustainability bond in late 2025 attracted nearly three times its initial target.

Together, the two issuances are the clearest evidence yet that Kenya's sustainable debt market is developing genuine institutional depth investors aren't just buying the label, they're bidding aggressively for instruments that combine reasonable yields with a credible social or environmental mandate.

For a domestic corporate bond market that has historically been thin and illiquid, that's a meaningful signal.
