Tanzania-Kenya Business Forum 2026
When Presidents William Ruto and Samia Suluhu Hassan sat down at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam on May 4, the headline number was this: bilateral trade between Kenya and Tanzania sits at around $860 million a year.
The target they left with is to push it past $1 billion within three years.
The question, as with all such forums, is whether the commitments will stick.
The Tanzania-Kenya Business Forum 2026, the first such gathering since 2021, brought together over 300 business leaders and policymakers for a day of panels, B2B matchmaking, and the kind of frank private-sector conversation that tends to produce results governments alone can't.
Eight Memoranda of Understanding were signed, covering energy, railways, agriculture, legal cooperation, maritime matters, seafarer certification, and standards harmonisation.
The most tangible of the infrastructure pledges: the revival of the Voi-Mwatate-Taveta railway line, and the commissioning of a feasibility study for a gas pipeline linking Tanzanian gas fields to Mombasa.
Both presidents also set a hard deadline of June 30, 2026 for eliminating all remaining non-tariff barriers between the two countries the double testing of goods, border delays, and inconsistent standards that have long frustrated cross-border traders on both sides.
A joint business council was established to hold governments accountable on that and future commitments, and the forum itself was institutionalised as an annual event, alternating between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
Ruto called for telecommunications to be integrated so that calls between the two countries are treated as local.
President Samia said the two countries are "joined at the hip" and can't afford to let narrow interests divide them.
Five hundred Kenyan companies have already invested $1.7 billion in Tanzania, creating 60,000 jobs. Tanzania's Bakhresa Group, Taifa Gas, and Amsons Group are among the companies moving the other direction. The corridor is working it's just not working as efficiently as it should be.
The June 30 deadline will be the first real test of whether this forum produced commitments or just a communiqué.
